Matching couple tattoos can evoke strong reactions, with some individuals feeling uncomfortable about the idea of matching tattoos, while others view them as a powerful way to solidify and proudly display their love for their partner. However, the truth is, that what others think doesn’t matter – each couple knows what is best for them.
That being said, you may have some inquiries regarding this phenomenon. Why do many couples choose to get matching tattoos in the first place, and consequently, why should you consider it?
What is the reason behind couples getting matching tattoos?
According to Rachel Wright, MA, LMFT, a licensed psychotherapist specializing in sex and relationships, matching tattoos can serve as a constant physical reminder of a person, commitment, care, experience, feeling, or moment. “When we see a tattoo on our body, it elicits some sort of feeling, and with a matching couples tattoo, it can create a sense of belonging, joy, commitment, or something else,” explains Wright.
Some couples may even feel that the experience of getting tattoos together brings them closer. “A shared experience, like getting a tattoo together, can strengthen the bond between a couple,” says Wright, although she acknowledges that matching tattoos are not a solution for all relationship issues. “Just like anything else, the impact it has depends on the dynamics of the relationship and the expectations associated with it,” she adds.
What is the significance of matching tattoos?
While the meaning of tattoos always stems from personal connections, some tattoo artists believe that the concept of matching tattoos has evolved in recent years. “Historically, it used to symbolize possessiveness and territoriality, but nowadays I see many friends using matching tattoos as a way to celebrate their connection and what they mean to each other,” says Saem Kim, a tattoo artist from California.
Kim explains that these tattoos can take various forms, such as interlocked chains resembling jewelry trends like forever bracelets, or letters connecting to form a word or phrase. “On the other hand, they can also represent shared hardships and the bonding that occurs during those moments, imprinted on your body,” she adds.
